Booked
Multi-surface solution to inspire change
The goal
Direct access to technology fuels an addiction to digital devices at a young age. With these habits formed early on, kids don’t reach to books for entertainment, and rather long for instant gratification, and social connection.
How might we use this to encourage kids to read?
The process
Recognition + Desire = Habits
For my Design Thinking program at IDEO, I created a business idea called “Booked”, which pairs child and parent app versions, a social network, and physical reading light, to solve the problem of reduced reading in kids.
I followed many research tactics to determine the problem area including: observation, interviews, focus groups, community validation and prototype testing.
The pitch
The problem
As technology usage increases, and reading decreases, a child’s imagination and self-soothing skills decrease. By combining small, achievable goals, with social influence, it will inspire kids delight in reading, and encourage forming new habits
Selection flow to set up a realistic reading schedule, and to help kids find books that would be most interesting to them
Reading flow connects with a physical light to pair song and colors along reading to make the experience more enjoyable, and reward reading.
Create engagement with friends in app, and connect with parents to create real life book clubs for their kids.
Extra moments of engagement to keep kids interested, and coming back after their reading sessions.
